Kube next steps: put it in prod!

RSVP ON MEETUP

Last month we looked at the basics of Kubernetes. But what does it look like to use Kubernetes to deploy a real application to a production environment? This month we’ll look at that.

We’ll use Google Kubernetes Engine to deploy an application to staging and production environments, using ConfigMaps and Secrets to configure the applications for each environment. We’ll set up a load balancer that sends traffic over HTTPS to our apps.

We’ll also take a look at alternate architectural strategies like using PubSub (equivalent to AWS Simple Queue Service) and how to set up Continuous Integration and Deployment through services like GitLab or CircleCI.

Google offers $300 in credit for new accounts on Google Cloud Platform, so you can sign up for an account and follow along if you want, creating a fully-fledged environment without spending any money.

AGENDA:

  • 6-6:15: Welcome/pizza/sponsor shoutouts
  • 6:15-6:30: Hiring/Looking/News
  • 6:30-8:00: Main Talk

Information about Cloud Native Denver

As a Cloud Engineering Manager said to me recently, “Kubernetes has won. Everyone else just has yet to realize they’ve lost.” Come find out why!

If you’re a dev who has just been told that your job description now includes “ops,” you live in the cloud or are just cloud-curious, this meetup will get you acquainted with the open source technologies driving the future of deployment and instrumentation.

Each third Wednesday of the month we’ll be exploring the technologies that are part of the Cloud Native Foundation: Kubernetes, Envoy, Prometheus, and more, along with complementary topics like Docker, AWS, Google Cloud, etc.
